The NUS Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans campaign is proud to launch the NUS LGBT Awards 2008.
In recent years the landscape of LGBT equality has changed dramatically. The rights, opportunities and privileges that the majority takes for granted are now finally becoming available to LGBT people. Adoption rights, recognition of partnerships, gender recognition, protections from discrimination in the workplace, vocational education and the provision of goods facilities and services have all contributed to making the UK a more equal place for LGBT people to live, study and work.
The student movement has played an important role in the realisation of these rights and has been at the forefront of the campaign for a more equal Britain. But LGBT student groups also play an important role for their members - enabling LGBT students to come together to share their experiences, and empowering them to campaign for change. That is why we believe that it is important that there is recognition for the activists and groups which have had an impact on the lives of LGBT Students in the UK.
The NUS LGBT Awards will recognise excellence, innovation and inclusivity within the LGBT student movement. Nine awards are open to LGBT groups, societies and individuals. Nominations close at 12pm on Thursday 24th April 2008.
A panel of judges for each award will choose the winners, featuring members from the NUS Liberation Unit, diversity specialists from award sponsors and leaders from the third sector.
Any NUS affiliated students’ union group or individual is able to nominate or be nominated for the awards. You can nominate your LGBT group or society, your campaign, your event or one of your publications. You can also nominate individuals for the LGBT campaigner of the year award. You are welcome to nominate your LGBT group or society for as many awards as you like.
The award ceremony for the NUS LGBT Awards will take place at the NUS LGBT Conference on Saturday 26th April 2008 in the Nottingham Britannia Hotel.
